Alpengasthof Bad Rothenbrunnen

Bad Rothenbrunnen in Sonntag
Nature sights

It all began with the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a shepherd who was cured whilst bathing his injured foot in a spring. Soon thereafter a bath house was built, and the spot was christened the “red spring”. The Alpengasthof Bad Rothenbrunnen lies at the heart of the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Nature Reserve and has been run by the Bitsche family since 2005.

We offer good traditional home cooking with a local flavour. Cash payment only.

Mineral spring & drinking water

The spring rises 500 m above the Gasthaus Rothebrunnen on the banks of the Matona stream. This is the place where a shepherd was supposedly cured whilst bathing his injured foot.

By contrast the water analysis carried out in 1960 sounds somewhat prosaic: it is a first-class mineral water (containing calcium, magnesium and sulphates), which is ideally suited for both bathing and drinking. It displays curative properties when used for rheumatic diseases, chronic liver sickness and light cases of diabetes, as well as for bile production in the liver. The iron deposits which lend the spring water a reddish-brown colour give Bad Rothenbrunnen its name.

A breath of days gone by

As an area of natural and cultural conservation interest, our Gadental lies at the heart of the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Park. The hotel itself is a listed building which we have restored with much love and attention to detail. In some corners of the house the atmosphere of the 19th century lives on, exuding a feeling of warmth and originality. This is a place without airs and graces, a place where you can be yourself. What you see is what you get!
